Arteries often become twisted or tortuous associated with hypertension, aging, atherosclerosis, and genetic deficiencies. However, the mechanisms of tortuosity development are not clear. Our previous studies have demonstrated that arteries buckle and become tortuous when the static lumen pressure exceeds a critical value. Here we investigated the dynamic buckling of arteries under pulsatile pressure. Recent results on theoretical analysis and experimental test of artery buckling under various pressure conditions will be presented. These results will broaden our understanding of vascular mechanics and shed light on the mechanisms of artery tortuosity development.
報告人簡介👼🏼:Dr. Hai-Chao Han is a Professor of Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA). He received his Ph.D. degree in Solid Mechanics/Biomechanics in 1991 from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China with joint training from the University of California at San Diego under the tutelage of Professors YC Fung and ZB Kuang. Dr. Han was an Associate Professor at Xi’an Jiaotong University and a Research Engineer II at Georgia Institute of Technology before joining UTSA in 2003.
Dr. Han’s research interests are in the area of cardiovascular biomechanics. His research activities involve vascular tissue remodeling and left ventricular remodeling post-myocardial infarction using theoretical modeling and experimental approaches. His current research is focused on elucidating the mechanism of artery tortuosity. Dr. Han’s research has been supported by AHA, State of Texas, NSF, NIH and he is a recipient of a CAREER award from NSF. He has published over 60 peer-reviewed journal papers. He is an Associate Editor of the ASME J Biomech Eng and an editorial board member of the Chinese J Med Biomech.
Dr. Han is an Adjunct Professor of SJTU.
